Grid Science · MetaTrader 5 Expert Advisor

The grid EA that shows its work.

Hydra Vision is a grid Expert Advisor (EA) for MetaTrader 5. It manages losses as it goes, explains every decision, and lets you see and control everything it does. Around the EA is an online platform to configure it, test it, watch it live and publish what it runs.

What Hydra Vision is not. It is software you configure and run on your own MetaTrader 5 account. We do not give investment advice, place trades for you or hold your money, and we make no promise of profit. Trading involves risk, and you can lose money.

The trouble with traditional grids

A grid EA opens a series of positions at set distances (steps) as the price moves against the first one. Using a grid to navigate market swings is sound. The trouble is the mechanical, predictable process deciding when, how and why positions open, and that every one of them waits for a single averaged exit.

  • One way out. Every position waits for the market to reach one calculated average price. The alternative is a maximum loss, accepted when the moment arrives.
  • Risk grows with every step. Doubling the volume brings the exit closer, but stacks the risk. In an explosive move, positions keep opening for no reason other than that the rules require it.
  • A one-trick pony. Many positions, deep drawdown, a long wait, and margin and swap tied up along the way, all for one profit at the end.

We should never hope in trading. Be purposeful about the strategy, and have a plan for every outcome.

Grid Science: evidence, not opinion

Grid Science is our method: empirical evidence, testable hypotheses and reproducible experiments in place of guesswork, whether we are building, debugging, testing or trading. It runs on one rule and five principles.

The rule: no position is opened without purpose. Every action taken must be intentional and strategically planned for.

  1. Trading configurations must be data-led and defensible.
  2. Every prospective position is evaluated for risk, and for its contribution to the grid, before it opens.
  3. Decision logic always has risk-on and risk-off reasoning available to it: best case and worst case.
  4. Every position in the grid, open and already closed, is aware of the others. Knowing the path the grid has traded protects its integrity.
  5. The system optimises and adapts in real time.

Three engines: how, when and why

Each engine was built because the one before it showed us what was missing. How this compares with a traditional grid EA.

PCL: Profit Closes Loss (how)

Built because a grid's single average price was both its only exit and its only way to reduce risk. The profit of one position removes the loss of another: two positions close together, the grid gets smaller, and a small profit is booked. Risk and profit become separate decisions, so steps can be more dynamic and volume need not be aggressive.

Example from a GBPUSD backtest, 19 March 2026: the anchor at −28.84 and level 4 at +36.99 closed together for +8.15, net of costs. The grid went from 6 positions to 4.

SmartEntry (when)

Built because PCL's data showed that poor re-entries made it work harder, at times forcing it into poor decisions. SmartEntry decides when the next position opens, sharing PCL's view of risk, strategy and the market. Not only "is this the right price to enter?" but "is this the right time to think about asking?"

Example from the same grid: the price crossed the next level at 21:45. SmartEntry waited 3 h 45 min while it fell about 50 pips further, then added the position.

GridSense (why)

Built because PCL and SmartEntry were recalculating so much that the overall view was getting lost. Every decision the engines make, with its reason, goes to GridSense. It processes it and hands it on: to the backtest report that replaces MetaTrader's, to your live analytics, and back into the engines.

One of its readings is Grid Density: how compact a grid is.

The platform: four stages

1. Configure and learn

Build a setfile by answering questions, each with the reasoning behind it. Every saved version gets a Strategy Print and a Tuning Print, so two files with different names can't pretend to be different, and a renamed copy can't pretend to be new.

  • Setfile Builder: build setfiles online; every version is kept and named by its prints.
  • Rules wizard: one question at a time, only the ones your earlier answers make relevant.
  • Asset Profiler: spread, swap and costs for a symbol at your broker, before you pick a step.
  • Help guides: the whole manual, linked from every setting.

2. Test and optimise

Upload a backtest and every grid in it is measured: how deep it went, how it closed, and how far equity fell along the way, not only where the balance ended.

  • Backtest Analysis: every run kept, every grid measured.
  • Compare: runs side by side, with the differences shown.
  • Settings Diff: exactly which settings differ between two runs.
  • Portfolio: several runs combined, as one account would hold them.
  • Replay: any grid, bar by bar.

Backtests are simulated and cannot predict future results.

3. Live and publish

Live Analytics measures a live account the way a backtest is measured, so the two can sit side by side. When you are ready, publish: the public page shows which configuration ran and when, fingerprinted, and links to your independent Myfxbook or FXBlue record.

  • Live Analytics: grids, closes and drawdown, on the same measures as your backtests.
  • Configuration Timeline: every configuration a chart ran, and when. Nothing is removed.
  • Publish: a public fingerprint page with your prints, the settings you choose to disclose, and the verified record it runs on.

4. Support

  • Hydra Agent: runs beside MetaTrader on each of your VPSs. It keeps your analytics current, shows every VPS, terminal and chart in one place, fetches logs when you ask, and carries your commands (suspend, wind down, pause new levels, close a side) to the EA. It never places, changes or closes a trade itself: the EA decides and answers. Live accounts only, with a Subscription.
  • Hydra Assistant: answers questions about any setting, setfile, backtest or account from the documentation and your own data, and shows where each answer came from.
  • Support tickets: we see your logs only if you grant access.

Why it is called Hydra Vision

Hydra: the multi-headed monster of Greek mythology. Vision: an all-seeing system that reads, stores, interprets and adapts to the right data at the right time, most of it not native to MetaTrader 5. Built over six years by a team with more than fifteen years of trading, one engine at a time, each one asked for by the data the last one collected.

Try it on a demo account. Everything you need to configure, test and understand Hydra Vision is in the free trial.
